Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus, and is located on the border between Europe and Asia. Over 9 million people live on an area of 86,600 km2 and more than 2.2 million live in the capital city – Baku.
It has been an independent country since 1991, and was previously a republic within the Soviet Union. The official language in the country is Azerbaijani (which belongs to the Turkish languages). The most widespread religion is Islam, and most Muslims are Shiites.
The state also includes the exclusive Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.
The economic development of the country is based on the production of oil and natural gas, and their export. Azerbaijan is estimated to have 0.4% of the world’s oil reserves and 1.4% of the world’s natural gas reserves.
Relations with other countries. Azerbaijan is in the biggest dispute with neighboring Armenia over its Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is dominated by Armenians. Although the region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, the Armenians conquered it in the 1991-1994 war. Azerbaijan carried out a successful offensive to return the region under its control in 2020, with the support of Turkey. With the mediation of Russia, a peace agreement was signed in which Armenia agreed to withdraw from the majority of Nagorno Karabakh. Also, Armenia has pledged to ensure an unhindered path for Azerbaijan to its exclave of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic under the supervision of Russian peacekeepers. In the dispute with Iran, there was a questionable region of north Iran (so-called South Azerbaijan) where the majority of Azerbaijanis who wanted to unite with Azerbaijan. The dispute was resolved by Iran committing to supply gas to the Azerbaijani exclave of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic since 1996. Minority peoples Lezgins want to unite with their compatriots from Russia and create an independent state of Lezgistan.
The mission of Mili Duelli in Azerbaijan is to help overcome the barriers imposed by the war, and to enable the international dialogue of Azerbaijani writers with neighboring countries and also to promote the Azerbaijani language and culture in the Balkans and the world.
