General about Mili Dueli

Mili Dueli is an international poetry competition held on an online platform. The organizer and creator of the idea is Nermin Delić. The competition has been held since 2012, and this is the ninth season. The host country of the competition is Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country in Southeast Europe. According to the American Forbes, in an article from 2018, Mili Dueli is the most popular poetry competition in this part of Europe. So far, they have presented several thousand authors, and they operate in a total of 127 of the 196 countries of the United Nations.

Mili Dueli consist of 5 elimination rounds. Each round has different rules and organization, and therefore voting. The Organizer, Jury and Readers participate in the voting. The organizer and the Jury vote in separate polls, anonymously, and their votes and comments are later published publicly. Readers have the opportunity to vote through social networks.

Mili Dueli 2023 – First and Second Round

There were 711 authors from 104 countries of the world in the First Round of the competition. The organizer had the task of reviewing all applications and selecting the TOP 450 authors to present to the Jury and Readers in the Second Round. Automatic passage to the Second Round was won by all authors who were the only ones registered from their country. In the Second Round, the TOP 450 authors were presented by dividing the authors into national duels (in each duel there were authors from the same country). Here, too, the authors who were the only ones from their own country had an automatic pass, and received the status of national winner of their country. In the Second Round, the Organizer, the Jury and the Readers voted, and the authors faced for the first time the public literary criticism of the Jury and the Readers.

Mili Dueli 2023 – Third round (Semifinals) – Organization and voting rules

PART 1 – INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE – Intercultural cooperation between the author and the members of the jury

TOP 250 authors from a total of 104 countries made it to the Third Round. In the Third Round, the authors were supposed to send a new poem. On that occasion, they had the opportunity to collaborate with Mentor, a member of the Jury who was assigned to help them select a poem and make any corrections to it. For those who are outside the speaking area of the former Yugoslavia (with the exception of Romania, Greece and Albania), our Jury member Anđela Turukalo Dabetić worked with the authors, who also translated all the poems into the Montenegrin language, which is related to other languages of the peoples of the former Yugoslavia and thus understandable to our Readers.

Notes after completing the first part of the Third Round:

  1. In some national duels (Egypt, Germany, Moldova, Japan, Argentina and Uruguay), one of the two remaining authors from that country did not fulfill the obligations related to sending the poem in the stipulated time or the intercultural dialogue was not fully established, and the place of the national winner of those countries already resolved at this stage.
  2. With a couple of authors, the desired intercultural dialogue in accordance with the mission of the project was not achieved, or it was violated in some way (they gave up, were prevented from sending the poem at the scheduled time, etc.). So, without participating in the second part of the Third Round, this season’s participation of those authors is over (Turkmenistan, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, Luxembourg, Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique, Canada, Honduras and Panama). Authors who are national winners, even and that who terminate our cooperation, will receive the Recognition for the national winner of that country at the end of the competition.

PART 2 – LITERARY CRITICISM BY READERS AND JURY

The authors will be presented on the social platform Facebook of our profile with the poems they sent after working with Mentor.

Voting rules:
In the Third Round, the Organizer, Jury and Readers vote.

1. Organizer and Jury. –The Organizer and the Jury vote in separate polls. The Jury has four members this time as well, with the Organizer’s role being highlighted. The voting principle is to give marks in the survey in the following order (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), which will be converted into Eurovision points in the final table: 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12. A member of the Jury can repeat his/her points (eg. 5 points can be awarded to one or more authors). A member of the Jury (who is Mentor) can only give maximum points (12 points) to one author (of several of them in a duel).mAlso, to those authors for whom the Jury member is not a Mentor, the Jury member can give minimum points (5 points) only to one of them.To all other authors to whom the Jury member is not a Mentor, the Jury member has the option to give points 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12.

Furthermore, considering that the members of the Jury, working as Mentors, have established a connection with the authors, each member of the Jury who is a Mentor, has the right to send one of his authors (in the entire Third Round) whom he trusts the most to the Finals (Fourth Round) with a GOLDEN VOTE. About the use of the GOLDEN VOTE, the Mentor is obliged to inform the Organizer by private message before the end of the last duel of the Third Round.

2. Readers. – All poems of the Third Round will be posted on the official Facebook profile of the competition. Readers will vote in the comments below the picture (by entering the ordinal number of the author). Poems will be posted in the description of the picture. Reader voting lasts 5 days. The author with the highest number of readers’ votes receives (12) points, the second-placed author receives (6) points, while the others do not receive a single point (0). Votes are recognized only from those who are friends/followers of the profile where the songs are uploaded.

Who goes to the Finals (Fourth Round)?

In duels where all authors are from the same country, only the first author goes directly to the Fourth Round, while the last author (in duels with more than 2 authors) is eliminated automatically. The decision on who from the others (from the second to the penultimate place) passes, is made by the Organizer.

In the duels where all the authors are from different countries, only the authors who satisfied and won more than 60 points in the Second and Third Round together, from the Organizers, Jury and Readers, pass.

Since the contest is based on intercultural dialogue, all messages that are not in accordance with our mission, and represent a form of hate speech, automatically eliminate the author from the competitive part of the contest. Remember that in addition to quality poetry, we also choose authors who will contribute to positive vibrations in the world with their appearance!

What will happen in the Fourth Round (Final)?
In that round, the authors will work with the Mentors to select a new poem and create an audiovisual performance that will be presented both in the Final and in the Grand Final (Fifth Round).

Mili Dueli Junior Poetry Contest: All authors under the age of 18 will participate in the competition, which will be held after the end of this one. The holder of the project for work with young authors is the Bosnian poet from Germany, Lela Zjajo.
